On Monday morning at 8 a.m., Len Erickson unloaded his car full of miniature wheels, controllers, sensors and Netbook computers and walked into David Jones’ algebra class at Half Moon Bay High School. He was introducing the school robotics project that the students would be working on for the last three days of summer school.

Farmworkers push for overtime pay
Fifty-one displaced workers from Nurserymen’s Exchange took up a new labor crusade last week, marching to Sacramento to hand-deliver a bill to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desk. The bill would extend time-and-a-half pay for farmworkers after eight hours a day and lift a decades-old overtime exemption for agriculture workers. Under existing law, overtime pay for farmworkers kicks in after 10 hours a day and 60 hours a week. Farmworkers are currently the only hourly employees in the state not to receive overtime pay after eight hours a day, 40 hours a week.

County outperforms coast as both show increases
While both the Coast and the County have shown improvements over the dismal year of 2009, the County has outperformed the Coast in every category. The good news is that prices and sales volume are up, average selling time is down and mortgages are at 50 year lows. For those looking for bad news, prices today are slightly below the 2004 levels and the market is rebounding.
