Criteria submitted for safe needle disposal

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Mar 10, 2010 - 04:41:32 pm PST

State Sen. Joe Simitian of Palo Alto will join representatives of the National MS Society, the Diabetes Coalition of California, the California Conference of Environmental Health Directors and other consumer health organizations to present criteria that will be used to evaluate needle disposal plans prepared by drug manufacturers. The criteria comes on the heels of Simitian’s SB 486, which was signed into law by Go. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year.

SB 486 made California the first state in the nation to require drug manufacturers to submit plans that provide for the safe disposal of used needles. The bill was proposed in Simitian’s annual “There Oughta Be A Law” contest, by a constituent from San Carlos who lives with Multiple Sclerosis. In California, approximately one in 12 households have someone who must self-administer injections to treat a variety of medical conditions.
