South Coast school district scoops up green award

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Mar 10, 2010 - 01:48:39 pm PST

La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District board members are traveling over the hill Thursday to collect a commendation for the district’s notably nutritious food program.

In 2008, the district partnered with Tom Kat Ranch in Pescadero to streamline wholesome foods from local growers to hungry students – an upgrade from a menu of frozen meals and sugary snacks.

Late last year the district was named one of five recipients of the 2010 Sustainability Award issued by Sustainable San Mateo County, a nonprofit group dedicated to increasing awareness about community-serving, eco-friendly practices.

The awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m., March 11, at the South San Francisco Conference Center, 255 South Airport Blvd., in South San Francisco. State Assemblyman Jerry Hill is slated to participate.
