On Friday, March 26, the Coastside honors its farmers at the 41st annual Mel Mello Farm Day Luncheon.

Named after respected Coastside farmer Mel Mello, Farm Day is one of the most popular events among the local agricultural community and also enjoyed by business and political leaders. It features a meal prepared by local residents in the farming community and made with locally grown produce, and awards and recognition.

The event is open to the public, who are encouraged to make reservations early. It takes place at the I.D.E.S. Hall at 735 Main St. in Half Moon Bay, and begins with a social hour at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon follows at 12:30 p.m.

On the menu is the conventional Farm Day repast: salad, roasted potatoes, tri-tip, garlic bread, sautéed artichokes and desserts from recipes by Eda Muller, wife of former Half Moon Bay Mayor John Muller.

To go with the meal are wines from La Nebbia Winery, beers from the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, coffee, tea and a no-host bar.

The luncheon is sponsored by Allied Waste San Mateo and presented by the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau and the family of Mel Mello. District Attorney Jim Fox will be the special guest speaker.

The highlight of the luncheon is the presentation of the Glenn Ashcraft Chamber Community Service Award, the Dolores Mullin “Like a Rock” Award and the coveted Farmer of the Year nod.

The community service award, named after the late Glenn Ashcraft, goes to a Coastsider who has consistently supported Coastside causes and given of him- or herself.

The “Like a Rock” Award, named for the late Dolores Mullin, is given to someone who has shown exemplary dedication, commitment and volunteerism benefiting the Coastside and its people.

The Farmer of the Year award recipient must be in farming, employ sound business practices, be actively involved in the community and in the continuation of the farming industry by nurturing and educating future innovators in this or related vocations.

Tickets for the luncheon are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. To make reservations, contact the chamber of commerce at 726-8380, ext. 100.
