| Rain the big winner in softball tournament By Mark Foyer [ markf@hmbreview.com ] Published/Last Modified on Friday, March 5, 2010 4:31 PM PST One might think that Naomi Patridge would be happy that two of the three days of the Half Moon Bay Softball Tournament were postponed, due to rain. The Cougars still have to play two games in pool play plus the crossover game to end the tournament. That means six players will be back for three games now that their basketball commitments are over. Think again. “I’d rather play,” Patridge said. “The rain is never a good thing.” The problem is trying to reschedule the games scrapped due to the rain. Some games were supposed to be made up Tuesday, with others scheduled for today and Saturday. Half Moon Bay was scheduled to play Soquel at 3:15 p.m. Patridge hopes to play Notre Dame-Belmont sometime this week to conclude pool play. But the Tigers have three games scheduled for this week, and are scheduled to play a nonleague game at Half Moon Bay on March 9. The Cougars did get one game in last week, falling to St. Ignatius, 4-3, Thursday. Melissa Kalkin was 3-for-3 and Megan Larratt contributed two hits. Katie Carlevaris fired two shutout innings and Chandra Anderson fielded everything hit her way at shortstop. “I was pleased with how we played,” Patridge said. Anderson and Carlevaris were among a group of players to join the team Feb. 15, following the conclusion of their frosh-soph basketball season. “I think this is going to be an interesting season,” Patridge said. “We are not going to have too much practice before we have games to play.” Still a member of the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division, the Cougars start league play on March 23, hosting Terra Nova. “The kids have to start jelling quickly,” Patridge said. r |
