Fire

7:07 p.m., Feb. 28, Bridgeport Drive

A fire with flames reaching 10 feet in the air was burning in the middle of a neighborhood park. San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the park and noticed several juveniles running away from the area. Deputies used a loudspeaker to order the suspects to stop. By the time deputies brought all the juveniles back to the scene, the fire had extinguished itself. Two of the suspects admitted starting the fire by pouring gasoline on the cement and igniting it. They got scared and ran away. The fire had apparently caused no injuries or property damage, and deputies released the juveniles to their parents.

Forgery

9:27 a.m., Feb. 28, San Carlos Avenue

A Coastisder’s debit card was fraudulently used to withdraw about $2,000 from various banks in Burbank, Riverside and Phoenix.

Theft

8:51 a.m., Feb. 21, San Juan Avenue

A previously deported felon was caught during an investigation for a separate theft. The man was taken to county jail to await another deportation.

Vandalism

6:46 p.m., Feb. 21, Avenue Granada

Someone slashed the tires on two vehicles parked in front of a home. The owner of the cars believed the crime may have been caused by an irate man he confronted for stealing recyclables on his block.

Half Moon Bay

Alcohol

12:48 p.m., Feb. 27, Poplar Beach

A group of teenagers near Poplar Beach fled from police officers patrolling the Coastal Trail. Three of the teenagers were stopped and one of them was caught with alcohol. He was arrested and released to his mother.

Battery

11:48 p.m., Feb. 24, Cypress Avenue

A 45-year-old man reportedly slapped his wife during an argument, spurring her to call for help. The husband tried to hide in the bathroom when police came to the home, and he resisted arrest when officers tried to drag him out. The man already had a restraining order for domestic violence.

6:23 p.m., Mar. 1, Highway 1

A 35-year-old man was arrested for an unspecified assault on a woman.

Burglary

Feb. 25, Highway 1

Numerous specialty plants were stolen when someone forced entry into a greenhouse flower business.

Drugs

12:50 p.m., Feb. 25, Lewis Foster Drive

A 19-year-old dropped a small amount of marijuana on the ground as a school administrator walked by. Police charged the student for having the drugs and released him on the promise to appear in court.

1:55 p.m., Feb. 26, Lewis Foster Drive

Two teenage students at Half Moon Bay High School were arrested after they admitted to smoking marijuana while off campus. The two boys were released to school staff.

DUI

7:55 p.m., Feb. 26, Miramontes Point Road

A 47-year-old woman driving a car collided into another vehicle. The crash produced no injuries but attracted the attention of police. The driver failed sobriety tests and was arrested for drunken driving.

Fraud

12:30 p.m., Feb. 25, Miramar Drive

A woman reported a young man came to her home saying he was selling magazines to raise money for a school soccer trip. The woman wrote him a check for $102, but she decided to do a Web search of his magazine-sales company. That search revealed his company was likely a scam. The woman cancelled her check and feared her personal information could be used for identity theft.

Missing child

10:30 a.m., Feb. 18, Miramontes Point Road

A 4-year-old child was found wandering alone by the Moonridge housing complex. Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate the child’s parent, who had lost track of child several times previously. Officers performed a criminal-record check on the parent, and looked through the home. They found no evidence of child abuse or neglect, but they scheduled a home visit with Child Protective Services.

Probation

11 p.m., Feb. 26, Granelli Avenue

A 14-year-old was refusing to follow his parent’s directions. The teenager was already on probation for previous infractions, and obeying his parents was one stipulation of his probation terms. The case is being forwarded to the district attorney’s office.

Stray dog

7:20 a.m., Feb. 24, Highway 1

A stray dog was spotted at Strawflower Village. The dog had no tags or identification, so police called the Peninsula Humane Society to take custody of the animal.

Theft

7:25 p.m., Feb. 27, Highway 92

Three people were spotted at Rite Aid grabbing liquor bottles and trying to exit the store, which activated the security alarm. The three thieves fled the store in a white BMW.

Feb. 25, Fairway Drive

A Craigslist seller received a cashier’s check for $1,100 more than the price of the item being sold. The seller was asked to wire back any money in excess of the sale amount. When the seller tried to do this, an e-mail transaction message came back as undeliverable. The seller realized the whole sale was a scam and put a stop on the money wire.

7:30 a.m., Feb. 28, Poplar Avenue

Someone stole about $480 in items from an unlocked vehicle. The stolen items included an iPod and charger and miscellaneous soccer equipment

Fraud

1:46 p.m., Feb. 18, Cuesta Real

A purchaser responded to an advertisement for an ATV for sale on Craigslist. Following a Web link, he was directed to an eBay site asking him to wire $2,900 via Western Union to a seller in Atlanta. When he transferred the cash, he received an e-mail verifying his payment that said a shipper would be contacting him to deliver the ATV. But he never received any more information, and when he contacted eBay about the sale, he learned the whole transaction was a scam. Western Union said they could not refund his cash, and they still charged him $190 for the wiring fee. His total loss was $3,090.

Moss Beach

Theft

1:52 p.m., Feb. 20, Virginia Avenue

A collection of gold bullion and silver-dollar coins was stolen from a Moss Beach home. Someone accessed the home and stole five ounces of solid gold, valued at about $5,600 total, along with 45 various silver-dollar coins. The victim believes a former housekeeper was involved in the theft.

Vandalism

3:15 p.m., Feb. 19, Highway 1

A vehicle owned by the San Mateo County Office of Education was vandalized when it was parked on a dirt road off the highway. Someone smashed a passenger window of the car while the driver, a county employee, was taking an educational hike.

2:18 a.m., Feb. 22, Johnson Pier

A drunken man was urinating on a vehicle in the parking lot of the Harbor Bar at Pillar Point Harbor. The man was arrested.

Theft

10 p.m., Feb. 18, Johnson Pier

A car parked near the C dock of Pillar Point Harbor was burglarized when someone unlocked the car door and stole a black backpack containing a Dell laptop and various identification cards.
