The only consolation Raul Castillo took away from Friday’s Mixed Martial Arts Strikeforce Challenge is that he didn’t get knocked out or submitted.

Castillo lost by unanimous decision to Hawaii’s Yancy Medeiros in a three-round caged bout, telecast by Showtime.

About 160 people from Half Moon Bay made the trip to the San Jose Civic Auditorium to give support to Castillo (6-1).

They got excited when Castillo’s image appeared on the TV screen, and louder when Castillo was introduced and stepped into the cage.

But the cheers from Castillo supporters were few and far between as the three-round fight proceeded, though the rest of the sellout crowd of 2,400 showed enthusiasm for the bout.

Castillo had his moments, coming close several times to bringing down Medeiros. But Castillo couldn’t introduce Medeiros to the mat.

“I tried to stay away from that and keep my game plan going,” Clancy said. “My game plan was to stay up.”

Castillo circled the ring several times during the fight, trying to find an opening to bring Medeiros down. There was none to be found.

“It seemed like he was a little more prepared for me than I was prepared for him this time,” Castillo said.

Medeiros scored more with jabs and kicks, a few stunning Castillo. Castillo had a few shots of his own.

“He got me some leg kicks, right jab and a right hand,” Medeiros said. “I was fortunate I could shake it off.”

When the 15-minute fight ended, Medeiros got the decision.

“The whole sport of MMA can change on one move, one punch, one takedown can change the whole game,” Medeiros said. “If we fight 10 times, I could go either 1-9 or 9-1. He’s a phenomenal fighter and I am glad that he took the fight with me. I respect him and his strength.”

Castillo praised Medeiros after the fight. But, he was critical of himself.

“I learned I need to train more,” Castillo said. “I need more discipline. I felt like I still fought pretty well for what I had. I suffered a couple of injuries during training camp. I tried to overcome them. But, it was his day.” r
