New gallery hosts contest to spotlight Coastside artists

Attention local artists: The Coastside Gallery is looking for you.

The local gallery, which opened in July and is located at 330 Main St. in Half Moon Bay, is issuing “a call for artists for a little local contest,” said owner David Cresson. The contest is geared for artists who live or work from Devil’s Slide to Pescadero, and from the ocean to Skyline Blvd.

The contest is also geared toward art that reflects the area, or art in which the subject matter has to do with the Coastside or can be interpreted as having to do with the Coastside.

As to just what constitutes art for this contest, the doors are open. The definition of “art” is a flexible matter of interpretation, said Cresson, who said “anything” could be accepted. “If they think it’s art, we’ll look at it as if it’s art,” he said.

But a high level of quality will be expected. Cresson said he is thinking of community service with this contest, looking to reach out to both individual Coastside artists and to volunteer or informal arts groups on the coast.

This gallery emphasizes “pieces from topflight emerging artists,” he said.

Since its opening, by what Cresson described as a “freak of nature” none of the artists who have shown work at the gallery have been local. This contest should refocus the artistic spotlight. “We want to make sure we celebrate local artists,” Cresson said.

The contest will be juried by former gallery owner and professional artist Richard Tette of Carmel Valley.

The contest award includes representation in the gallery through the month of April, meaning that a portion of wall space will be set aside for the winning artist’s work to hang in the gallery that month. In addition, the gallery will represent, or handle sales of, the work.

Cresson added that as part of the award, the gallery will hold a reception for the winning artist in mid-April at a date to be determined, and that the initial showing will be followed up with a second showing at a later date.

Artists are encouraged to enter one to eight pieces of artwork for the contest, and there is no entry fee. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2010.

Artwork should be submitted electronically, Cresson said, in the form of digitized images sent via e-mail to coastsideliving@yahoo.com.

The submitting artists should be sure to include their own contact information with submissions. Notification of the contest results will take place in early April, Cresson said.

For more information on the contest or the gallery, call 726-4460.
