September 17, 1947 – February 18, 2010

Resident of Montara

A longtime resident of the San Mateo County Coastside, Donna touched many lives and hearts in her 62 years. She will be greatly missed and forever loved.

She was born in Alameda and grew up in Hayward, where she met the love of her life, Bob Hail, as a teenager when her family moved in across the street from his. Theirs was a courtship of Corvettes and burger joints that led to a lifelong romance, 43 years of marriage and two daughters, Kathy and Julie.

Donna was a woman of many talents. She was passionate about music, cars and animals – particularly the numerous cats who were lucky enough to “own her” during her lifetime – but above all, she lived to love her family, especially her five grandchildren, Spencer, Jennifer, Oliver, Dashiell and Meredith.

In addition to doting on her grandchildren, she also enjoyed traveling with Bob, including trips to visit their kids in Florida and Indiana, and many vacations to favorite warm-weather destinations including Arizona, the Caribbean and Hawaii. They also enjoyed getaways to their condo on Lake Tahoe.

Among her interests, Donna was a crossword puzzle enthusiast and a fantastic seamstress who could sew anything. She was the creator of many beautiful things, including countless crocheted baby blankets for all the little ones who came into the world on her watch. She worked for 22 years as an administrative assistant at Genentech in South San Francisco where she had many wonderful friends.

In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Donna also is survived by a brother, John Mallon of Fremont, and a sister, Judy Hampton of West Chester, Ohio.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service for Donna on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
