| Learn about Coastside birds of prey on Saturday Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 12:49 PM PST The Coastside Land Trust will host a raptor identification workshop and Wavecrest bird walk from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. The goal of the workshop is to teach participants about local birds of prey such as hawks, eagles, falcons, kites and owls. The workshop is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Ocean Shore train depot below the Johnston House at 110 Higgins Canyon Road in Half Moon Bay. The bird walk follows from 3 to 6 p.m. beginning at Smith Field. The workshop will be led by Half Moon Bay biologist and lifelong birder Alvaro Jaramillo. He is also the author of Field Guide to the Birds of Chile and New World Blackbirds. The workshop fee is $15/general, $5/seniors and free for youth under 18. The bird walk will be led by Jaramillo joined by local wildlife biologist, environmental consultant and Sequoia Audubon Society member Gary Deghi. Participants are advised to bring binoculars and wear layers and sturdy, waterproof shoes. Participants will study field marks and discuss bird behavior, ecology and migratory patterns.
