Marine Protected Areas get $4 million cash injection

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010 - 11:41:24 am PST

Officials keeping watch over a slew of protected areas off the California coast were given a financial boost this week. On Tuesday, the California Ocean Protection Council announced it is bestowing $4 million to bolster monitoring of the 22 Marine Protected Areas in the North Central Coast sector, which runs from Mendocino south to Pigeon Point.

The money is going to the Baseline Program, which sends teams of researchers and “citizen-scientists” to key near-shore areas to gather information on various marine ecosystems, including kelp forests, deep rocky habitats, estuaries and beaches. The grant is part of a $16 million budget propping program monitoring up and down the state.
