Tour of California route through Coastside released

Coordinators of the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race released Wednesday a detailed map of the route competitors will follow when they speed through the Coastside in mid-May.

The third stage of the eight-stage race runs about 116 miles from San Francisco to Santa Cruz and takes competitors on a midway jaunt through some of the Coastside’s scenic thoroughfares. Cyclists stick to Highway 1 until they enter Half Moon Bay, where they veer east on Tunitas Creek Road. From that point, cyclists will follow a route modified from last year’s race.

Last year racers coming off Tunitas Creek Road took Highway 35 south to Highway 84 and followed the roadway through to Highway 1 at San Gregorio State Beach. This year they’ll snake into Woodside, down Highway 84 through La Honda and continue south on Pescadero Creek Road, taking turns on Cloverdale Road and Gazos Creek Road to stay southbound until they hit Highway 1 just north of Año Nuevo.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Bruce Hooley said the mileage is about the same.

The race features some of the world’s top cyclists, including seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer. It’s the fifth straight year for the race, and the second time a portion of it includes the Coastside.
