Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jan 20, 2010 - 10:38:12 am PST

John Francis Eldridge, age 87, beloved husband, father, grandpa, veteran of World War II and resident of Half Moon Bay, passed away at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 29, 1922, in the town of Elma, N.Y., to the late Willard and Irene Eldridge. John served as a first sergeant in the Air Force for more than 27 years and was devoted to the nation he loved. On Oct. 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Elena Dikova of Sofia, Bulgaria. Together they were stationed all over Europe and the United States during his long and colorful military career.

John is survived by his wife, Elena, son Bruce, daughters Jennifer and Sandy, their husbands Rick and Loren, and two beloved granddaughters, Jessica and Emma. He is also survived by his brother Don. He was preceded in death by his brothers Gary and Bill and sisters Dorothy and Jean.

John was a voracious reader, had a formidable memory and enjoyed all kinds of music. He was an avid skier who spent many years skiing throughout Europe. He had a quick wit, a quicker smile, and a capacity for unbounded generosity and kindness. His memory and recall of the people and events in his life remained perfect, right up the end of his life. John frequently stopped to converse with various shop owners and townspeople in Half Moon Bay and loved living on the coast. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a special man with a big heart. To know him was to love him.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 12 p.m. at the Palo Alto VA Hospital Chapel, (first floor, end of corridor on right) Bldg. 100, 3801 Miranda Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94304. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Fisher House Foundation, Inc. 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville MD, 20850-5168. This organization provides accommodations to the families of soldiers who have been wounded or injured while serving their country.
