The Children’s Art Walk, sponsored by the Hatch Elementary School PTO with other organizers from Farallone View and El Granada schools, will spice up downtown stores with mostly two-dimensional art pieces in an event aiming to spotlight kids, boost the economy and bring folks into the town.
The art was created at the schools through the Art in Action program.

The idea for the art walk came from fellow parent Christy Samuels of El Granada. For a few years while she and husband Marc were attending graduate school in Richmond, Va., they noticed artwork from local kids posted in shop windows in nearby Carytown.
When they settled on the Coastside and saw the “centralized downtown” of Half Moon Bay, with similar shops, they thought of bringing the idea here.
“We thought it was a good way to get some families downtown,” said Samuels.
Art in Action offers lessons in which students study prominent artists and aspects of art, and then create their own artworks based on those elements.
The merchants selected the art works and will display them in their own stores. “We encouraged them to get creative and put (the art) where they like,” Hosfeldt said.
The art will be available for viewing according to shops’ business hours. Lists of participants and maps of the business district where art will be displayed, will be available at the three schools, Ink Spell Books, Harbor Seal Co. and Posh Moon, said Samuels.
Due to limited space, and since Art in Action generally focuses on the younger grades, not every child in the schools will have art included in the event. “But we’re happy that there is going to be a sampling from all three elementary schools,” said Samuels.
The exhibit, begins May 29 and will continue through June 7.
